Tide Pools

Gerstle Cove, Salt Point

Gerstle Cove Marine Reserve is located in Salt Point State Park. It is a protected area that does not allow fishing or any wildlife to be taken (eg abalone).

"Marine life can be experienced on land during low tide in the rocky intertidal zone through tide pool exploration. When exploring these areas remember that many of these organisms can be damaged or destroyed by even the simple act of turning over a rock and exposing the animals to the sun."
~California Department of Parks

Shell Beach

Shell Beach is located far north up the Sonoma Coast at Sea Ranch. Five Sea Ranch access trails provide trailhead parking areas, restrooms and a short hike to outstanding coastal access points.

"Shell Beach is a favorite location for beachcombing and tide pooling. It is used by schools as an outdoor classroom for the study of tidal pool marine life and enjoys a reputation as a prime fishing spot."

Tips
* Pick up a field guide
* Plan your trip around the low tide. Tide books can be found at most sporting good stores or online.
* Be willing to get a bit wet!
* Be a detective, many species are very good at hiding themselves
* Look to the bottom of the pools, this is where the most activity is at.

Warnings
* Don't turn your back on the ocean. The passing large wave can catch you by surprise.
* Don't let the rising tide cut you off from shore
